This is a painting looking up Walnut Street, painted outdoors, directly in front of Dick’s Bar and Grill. One of Wisconsin’s oldest continuously running saloons, it burned to the ground in the fire of 1866, and was even blamed as the cause of the fire.
 
In the lower right, the charming W.B. Hatch Building, located at 112 Walnut Street, is one of the oldest buildings in Hudson. This pre-Civil War building first housed a dry goods store, and later a harness and leather shop. At one time it was owned by the father of General Ulysses S. Grant. The building was the only structure in the business district to survive the fire of 1866.
 
The quietness of the scene, the view up the hilly street, the long bold shadows, and reflections in the windows create a dramatic effect.
